Deep sleep. Eyes opened. Wake Up.
I walk down to Vikasa’s Yoga Shala on the Sea and the Gayatri Mantra is playing. So wonderful! The chant alters my state and I begin my practice.
We start the day with pranayama and meditation followed by asana class with our Teacher Training Instructor George. Abdominal exercises, Warrior I and Warrior III. We prepare ourselves for handstand, camel pose, shoulder stand, halasana, head stand, chaturanga, updog, downdog series… Align, activate and contract Uddijana Bandha. Lengthen your spine…

After class I have a superb breakfast: fresh juices, eggs, mixed green salad, tropical fruits, cream cheese, rice with ananas, musli and yogurt, organic coffee and milk. I am eating in heaven! The food is light and I feel lighter.

In afternoon class we learn about Tapas. Tapas means discipline like giving up eating chocolates or meat. We learn Satsang: gathering and sharing truth. We sing a mantra: Om Nama Shivaya. The mantra is calming and everyone in the class is tuned in so well. This mantra means the divine self. Shiva is the representation of the divine consciousness.

In the evening Asana Practice with Kosta I feel weak from push-ups and chaturanga. I ask George, “Why do my elbows hurt so much? I can’t do the poses.” He just says, “Stop!” I am surprised. “Stop?” I say about to cry, “Why? Everybody will move on and I am going to wait here by myself … like this?” George calms me down, but when the moment of Savaasana comes, and the lights are off, I cry. I don’t stop crying till the end of Savasana. I reach for my towel, but I am not able to reach it. I am alone crying and helpless on my mat.

After class I go to Kosta. I start to cry again. My cries turn to laughter, and then crying again, and then laughing. Kosta explains that my feelings, reactions, were perfect because they showed that I am experiencing progress and this is a good sign.

He gives me courage.

Our first week has finished! Tomorrow is the day off.

While you have probably been keeping an eye open for different super foods, detox theories, or other healing magic bullet that might be out there, hopefully you haven’t over looked one of the most powerful, and available methods of healing: Touch.

Touch is an intimate phenomenon. When enough pressure to the skin stimulates the sense organs underneath, they send a signal to the central nervous system which is experienced as “touching” with something. The sensation can be read as having different qualities; soft, hard, smooth, hard, delicate, clumsy, and so on. Of course it’s not just tactile information that is experienced. The qualities of touch cue emotional and physiological response as well. Human touch takes it to a whole new level. All objects carry a “current” or charge to them but there is none so beneficially powerful in affect as the welcome touch of another human being. There is the bonding aspect which creates a release of being-health supporting hormones but there is actually much much more to the healing powers of touch. The charge of another bio-electr0magnetic human body that is welcome to come close, or touch, offers valuable feedback through relativity to the state of one’s own energetic…

The post The Healing of Touch and Yoga appeared first on Vikasa.

The charge of another bio-electr0magnetic human body that is welcome to come close, or touch, offers valuable feedback through relativity to the state of one’s own energetic systems. Even more amazingly is that through intention and the willful stepping in to of “giving” and “receiving” roles this flow of energy becomes more direct and notably therapeutic. This is the general premise of Reiki healing, except that in Reiki the practitioner is functioning as a conduit for larger energy systems, ie. universal.

If Reiki seems to far out there for you, Thai massage, offered at Vikasa Yoga, is a more grounded alternative. Thai massage works much like Yoga Asana practice, applying pressure to the body in different positions, emphasizing blood circulation in certain areas, and assisting the movement of lymph fluid. While you might normally think of the cliche image of drifting off dreamily while receiving massage, just like yoga practice, the benefits are increased notably when you breath in sync to the movements of the masseuse and stay alert, yet relaxed, like meditation. Practice being subtly responsive to the massage. Have a hyper awareness of not only the point of contact but the resulting chain of tissue movement leading to the point of contact and how and where it plays out in your body. Depending on the technique used, say for example in a seated position being massaged from the back, it may be even good to engage stabilizing core muscle. There is also a relationship aspect that is built between you and your masseuse, whether it’s one session or years of patronage.

While receiving Thai massage you can focus on taking your longest slowest deepest breaths. If there is a place the masseuse is working that is especially tight or tense for you, utilize your exhale during the deep tissue pressure. This is also very good during the back massage portion. It can really help to invigorate and cleanse deeper lunge tissues if you breath out steadily while pressure is applied onto the back of the ribcage. Sometimes you can also try breathing out longer and longer and longer….and longer! Having some yoga experience does help, check up Ujjayi breathing and try it during your next massage. Your masseuse will be amazed at how long you breath and the metamorphosis of your thoracic volume!

Practicing Yoga in Thailand than has a great advantage! Massage is prevalent, affordable, and arguably one of the best styles of massage in the world for it’s holistic comprehensiveness and obvious affects.

The practice I’ve had of opening up to touch from the many Thai massage I’ve had has made me more comfortable and confident to put metta(loving kindness) into my own use of touch, in mindful adjustments for my Yoga students and also in my interactions with friends and intimate relationships. Use your touch to show affection, reassure, heal, create bonds, give energy, and merge into one another’s embrace.

I love to practice in the big sala at Vikasa Yoga where the ebb and flow of the Gulf of Thailand beside me reminds me to wash a flow of my own “inner” touch throughout my mind-body, creating awareness, sympathy, and healing. All the positive ways you normally use touch can also be generated inwardly just as much as outwardly.

Thanks for reading and Happy Teacher’s Day from Thailand!

So your curiosity has brought you to read my article about raw food here today. In gratitude, I’ll do my best to make it a little different than other articles you may have read about raw food. Everyone pretty much agrees that some amount of raw food in our diet is basically essential for optimum health, but why? I’ll also give some useful tips to for bringing a healthy serving of living goodness into yourself.
Increasing awareness of self… through Yoga… and raw food. Know that this article isn’t going to be very much about nutrition. While that is a very useful area of knowledge I would rather make this more interesting than just saying such and such raw food item has such and such nutrients good for x.
In fact, let’s just briefly get a little bit of debate regarding nutrition of raw oand cooked food out of the way…
The quantity and quality of nutrition that is bio-available, that is… able to be accessed by your body, within your foods differs between raw and cooked food and amongst foods in individual cases. Here are some examples.

Cooking vegetables breaks down plants’ naturally tougher cell walls making some nutrients…

The post Yoga and Raw Food appeared first on Vikasa.

Cooking vegetables breaks down plants’ naturally tougher cell walls making some nutrients more accessible.

Heat damages certain nutrients decreasing their abundance in the food, such as antioxidants in high heat or frying.

Boiling or steaming leaches nutrients out decreasing their abundance.

Some foods absolutely require cooking to be digestable while others may become unbalancing to the body if cooked

As you can see, speaking purely nutritionally, there are instances where raw seems better and cooked seems better depending on the specific food in question. Some would argue the foods that HAVE to be cooked we shouldn’t be eating anyway because there are not wild animals cooking out there. In some cases a cooked food seems better for more accessible nutrition but more challenging for the digestive tract and body pH . When it comes to this debate I do think it’s more about proportion of the serving relative to the meal rather than decide you will or will not eat a certain thing ever again. A lot of people say cooked tomatoes are very acidic for you body(not good) yet lycopene is much more accessible after cooking. So…? When you have cooked tomato sauce on pizza or spaghetti get some alkalizing greens too! Balance is always the key. Gauge how much how your body can handle and still feel fresh and light. Most people could eat a half a pound of fresh spinach and feel great…but if you did the same thing with tomato sauce you probably wouldn’t feel so nice.

Oh, and what about the enzymes argument? Well, it seems that nutritionally there is no evidence backing up that you should eat food raw because you need it’s enzymes to do some digestive chemistry….But! ….And now here’s where I get all Yogic.

Yoga practice, we could say, is anything that increases our awareness of the relationships in the phenomenal world, or our experiences of them, and further, harbors us in a sense of being which is yet beyond these phenomenon, being the seer of them. You are alive. And, whatever the definition of “alive” is, we all pretty much agree that plants and animals are alive too. We could also say living things carry a lot of information. They are also carrying out life processes even as they get chewed up and slide down your esophagus. They have bio-electromagnetic fields, and Prana, the cosmically manifest intelligent life energy. Consider that raw foods are not better merely because they “have greater nutritional value(not in all cases) and enzymes(not validated)” but because these things in their living, vibrating forms, inform our physiology on a.) how to best digest and assimilate their vital elements, and b.) what living things do and of what are they made. Those enzymes could be indicators. This is the yoga practice of eating. Chewing thoroughly, tasting it, and studying the living taste, every nuance and subtlety of it. That information is revealing to the nature of the web of life on the Earth and your own physiology. Try everything you can and really taste it, as a single raw entree at least once.(with exceptions… I mean you Thai chili!) Ok, just a little lick…

We all have unique metabolic signatures and accumulated specialization to eating certain foods. Because of this, I don’t recommend anyone to any specific diet. Instead, if you’re interested to incorporate more raw food to your diet, simply experiment and shift around your habitual food habit with these tips. They can also be a great way to prepare for going on a raw food fast or a yoga and raw food retreat.

Useful tips for Raw Wisdom

When you are cooking a meal with vegetables, snack on each veggie raw as you prepare your main meal.

Be observant. Try snacking on a certain veggie in both raw and cooked forms on different occasions and note your bodies reaction.

At least once a day eat a pile of raw green stuff. It could be an all raw salad with some other veggies, or just a favorite leaf, kale, bak choy, spinach, etc.

Get organic. The nutritional value could be 4x higher(which is what it should be) compared to mass produced and chemically tended crops.

Find a not too sweet, agreeable fruit to eat as a size-able snack. My favorites, half a small watermelon, bananas all afternoon, or just sitting down with a bag full of oranges or toting apples around with me.

Wash your produce with a natural rinse like this one that removes dirt, bacteria, and chemicals.

There is something undeniably present in living food that’s not in cooked food. It’s in you right now and it’s driving the creative impetus. It doesn’t mean we should give up the taste-tacular wonders of our culinary achievements, which by the way are being quickly reproduced by ingenious raw food chefs like Boris Lauser who will be co-hosting the Yoga and Raw Food Retreat with Kosta at Vikasa Yoga next February.

It does mean though that we can “commune with life energy”, “imbibe prana through living food” and so on, and that it’s empowering. Final words. Fruit Meal. Veggie Meal. Every day.

Sincerely,

George Anthony

Let me first tell you that the applications of Yoga for therapy are limitless really. Look at any kind of yoga practice; poses, breathing, or meditation. What is really happening there? You are practicing being consciously aware of yourself and choosing how to be in that environment.

Let me first tell you that the applications of Yoga for therapy are limitless really. Look at any kind of yoga practice; poses, breathing, or meditation. What is really happening there? You are practicing being consciously aware of yourself and choosing how to be in that environment. The general therapeutic affect of any of these practices is that you become skilled at perceiving yourself presently, perhaps curious to discover if there is still yet some broader capacity for that perception, and empowered by realizing that you can choose how to be in yourself with any situation, at any moment, and in a way that is genuinely healing to your whole body-mind system more and more often. This healing increases your senses and energy which creates a feedback loop increasing your ability to perceive yourself and the inter connectivity of life. You can choose to be calm. You can choose to energize yourself. You can choose to love yourself and others unconditionally. You may not feel that immediately but you can choose to move in the right direction. The more aware you become of the relationship between these aspects; your breath, mind, and body(in movements or repose) the more you realize how infinite you are.

Yoga is a healing modality that creates balance and transformation. Sometimes people may become obsessive about how to heal from a certain ailment or malady. They focus so hard upon what ails them and their energy becomes consumed in a downward spiral. By Yoga practice you expand your awareness to explore your boundaries. What is the mobility of my body? What is the capacity of this breath in this position? In? Out? How long before the tendencies of my mind interrupt my silence? This expansion of awareness is akin to taking stock on all your resources or being the manager of all your systems and behaviors. Healing which really lasts comes from the intelligence provided by observing yourself and choosing those things which you intuitively feel are bringing you towards well-being. As all things are connected, a positive change in one aspect of your life or relationships can lead to healing in another.

Yoga teaches you the value of retreat, of rest, of times of reflection or integrating your recent experiences. This is the principle in the practice of the corpse pose everyone loves at the end of physical yoga practices. When you get into Yoga you’ll find your skill at relaxing increases. Relaxation is a skill, but it’s a skill of not doing anything. How do you keep entertained like that? Observe yourself. Can you feel your heart beat? Can you feel it in your veins? Can you feel it in your little toes? How about your nervous system? Maybe normally you don’t think of “feeling” your nervous system but how do you feel energetically; serene, agitated, sensitive, dull, blissful? As you observe these things and your own breathing can you feel subtle shifts in your mind? What was that, a thought, or something more subtle? Going into these deep states of relaxation is tapping into the natural healing and restorative intelligences of your mind-body systems. They are pro at this. They just need your attention and they get even better at what they were made for…to help you feel love, to give and receive love.

For me yoga has helped me overcome emotional pains, give up destructive behaviors, increased my self worth, healed minor injuries, given my life purpose, and made me very enthusiastic about exploring the possibilities with a positive attitude for myself and the world. I can do it so well I can even gently subdue my rational mind and believe “unbelievable” things. Not because I really want to think that they are real, but because I want to see what happens to me when I do. And maybe… because somethings don’t become true, until you believe in them.

You can arrange the pages in different order to create different classes for yourself.

Deciding to do a Yoga Teacher Training in Asia, especially in Thailand, has some nice benefits. Thai culture is infused with Buddhism which is an offspring of the ancient Yogic philosophies. It reflects in the behavior and character of the people here who generally tend to be very friendly and polite. You’ll find lots of inspiration visiting the Thai temples and seeing people make ritual offerings all over the place. And even though most Thai’s are Buddhist, they also incorporate the Hindu deities used by the traditional Yogis of India. It’s common to see statues of Shiva, Ganesh, Saraswati, and so on. The climate here is also just right for having a vigorous and detoxifying practice.

Philosophy and Spirit of Yoga Module

This portion of the course is going to reveal more than you ever even thought there was to Yoga! You’re understanding of why, how, and what we call Yoga will be amplified. Ram will be teaching you the most important and relevant ancient texts of India that show the bigger spiritual picture of Yoga and how to live in it. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras will be examined carefully as this masterpiece provides a clear view into the nature of Mind, self-discipline, and the path to Enlightenment. The Bhagavad Gita will be studied as a means for understanding Dhamma, or our sacred duty in the world. Sanskrit, the language of Yoga, will be explored as you hear and recite different mantras and sutras which invoke the wisdom of sages and the empowering vibrations of the Sanskrit alphabet. This bridge of spoken Sanskrit will lead you into energetic practices, really experiencing what the ancient Yogis of India have blessedly passed down to us. Pranayama, methods of controlling and moving energy, will be taught and practiced regularly, as well as group singing in the Kirtan. Pranayama can greatly increase the power of our discipline and our bodies. The Kirtan experience helps us dissolve into the heart of the human spirit, singing together as one group, no thoughts, just our voices and the music.

Anatomy and Therapy of Yoga Module

These practical based sessions, aim at introducing the Anatomy and Physiology that relate to Yoga. Basic anatomical structures and definition of terms will be introduced, followed by practical sessions on the various joints that are most prone to injuries in Yoga. It is the aim of this session to reduce the likelihood of injuries in the vertebral column, knee joint complex, hip joint, shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle. Constraints due to individual structural variations and how these would affect asana performance will also be discussed. Anatomy session will not be completed unless you can put your knowledge into practice and application. The Applied Anatomy training is focused on how to adjust clients and / or using Yoga props, based on the understanding of joint structures and the analysis of the asanas. To perfect student’s understanding, the Anatomy & Physiology session also includes the basic physiology of the respiratory system and digestive system. Understanding these internal dynamic movements leads the practitioner to a more profound energetic practice as you learn how to develop greater lung capacity and refine your awareness of Bandha.

Marketing And Business of Yoga Module

I also had all these doubts when I started out… This portion of the course will teach you how to work less, and earn more. We will teach you how to network, create useful contacts, present yourself and market yourself as a teacher or future studio owner. We will give you tips on how to create teacher bios, workshop descriptions and how to get your first yoga job, or get a better job if you are already teaching an occasional class. We will teach you about pricing and marketing, and about how to grow into teaching workshops, retreats and international events! We will give you all the info you need to present yourself to the world in the appropriate manner to follow your dreams and reach your goals. We did it, so can You!!!

Yoga in Action Module

This program is about embarking on a journey of self-inquiry, with the support of a like-minded group, that leads to action within our community and outside world. “Action” can be many things, ranging from healing relationships with family and friends, to extending oneself to the larger community, or doing national or international work. The main intention is to understand the nature of our interdependence and our unique role in the web of life: to feel significant and as a part of this greater whole. This is the embodiment of Karma Yoga and also Dhamma, or self-less service and the fulfilling of your duty in this life. During this week, you will be guided through an intensive transformational process using vinyasa flow yoga and other tools to uncover your deepest passions and motivation. We will combine yoga asanas, meditation and visualization, experiential exercises, process work and ritual with the practical tools of communication, organizing, and collaborating with your peers. We will also introduce practical methods for each of you to begin to bring your own unique purpose into the world as action with the support and inspiration of your community. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of purpose and passion, armed with skills to help you be a more effective leader and agent of change in the world.

Vikasa Yoga

Vikasa means evolution, or spiritual development, when translated from Sanskrit. The concept of “evolution of yoga” is based on the notion that everything in the world evolves constantly, including human beings. Our primary goal as a human race and that of any living organism is evolution, and yoga can be seen as a tool to facilitate such evolution in any given individual. However, as the practice of yoga itself changes with time and place, as new techniques are being introduced, as the approach is becoming more technical, precise and scientific – any definition of it as a system or style seems to be a limitation in itself. Therefore, the “Evolution of Yoga” approach has to be seen as an ever evolving process, which anyone can be a part of, rather than a complete static system. “Evolution of Yoga” approach is based on integrating deep core work with precise alignment, combining active dynamic exercises from different disciplines with static poses from classic hatha yoga schools, alternating dynamic and static, pressure and deep relaxation, therefore exploring ha-tha or the yin and yang concept to its maximum potential, using the principle of hyper compensation. Evolution of Yoga is about challenging yourself with an ever progressing program in order to transform, optimize and balance to fine-tune your system. Core bodywork is integrated with precision breathing, through which the highest states of concentration can be experienced. As the students get more familiar with the bodywork, pranayama or breathing exercises are introduced to take the practitioner to the next level. This ultimately leads to meditation and expansion of consciousness, or – evolution!

We have asked our students to describe what Vikasa Yoga is after completing the course.

“Like the Freedom of the wind is to constantly flow, the Vikasa Practice of Yoga evolution is one to be constantly challenged, Practiced,Explored and Enjoyed!!!… Vikasa has no boundaries but endless opportunities….This is my Vikasa Concept….its Evolution Time!!! Namaste”

-Clinton Chan, UK

“To me Vikasa yoga style is always challenging, powerful, demanding. It breaks egos and pushes you beyond your known boundaries. It makes you work and discover the level of your will power. But since it means Evolution – it can be adapted to anybody of any level!”

-Svetlana Gordienko, Russia

“Vikasa Yoga challenges your own limitations, will power and determination. It is a strong and demanding practice, that can be tailored to any level and is a type of yoga that encourages self exploration, and ultimately into self inquiry of your own practice and growth as a yoga practitioner. What it is definitely NOT is a static, confined practice but rather encourages freedom of expression through asanas.”

-Nabilla Sharil, Malaysia

“Vikasa Yoga means evolution, not only in Yoga practice but also in the Yogi him or herself. It is a practice that pushes to a place unimaginable but always capable, is challenging for the advanced students and adaptable to those just being introduced to the practice. Vikasa Yoga brings results quickly not only in body, but in mind and soul. It is deeply rooted in ancient philosophy but has adapted to modern times and is practical for the present day practitioner. Vikas Yoga is relevant for today, a tool to raise consciousness and reach a diverse, wide range of people and the masses. I feel blessed to be a part of the concept. Thank you Kosta – Namaste”

-Ryan Wilaby, Usa/Bali

“Vikasa is a progressive, strength building style of hatha yoga. Vikasa yoga is adaptable to any skill level and encourages practitioners to challenge themselves, pushing outside comfort zones to achieve real transformational results in both body and mind. Vikasa is evolutionary, freestyle yoga.”

-Denise White, Uk

“Vikasa Yoga is for me strong workout combining traditional isometric exercise with an isotonic workout. The main focus is on increasing core strength and overall body flexibility. The holding times in the postures are longer than e.g. in Ashtanga and therefore (in my opinion) the strength increase is quicker than in a vinyasa class. The breathing exercises before the asana practice completes a fantastic workout. I believe that everybody in the teacher training (and regular students that come to the Vikasa studio at least 3 times a week) could see the result. I really appreciate that the Vikasa teacher trainers are all very open minded. In other Yoga styles you find very narrow minded asana practice. However, during the teacher raining I found out that Vikasa yoga is not only about asanas. It is really a new age Yoga lifestyle regarding food and philosophy.
I can see that you live your passion and that you want to give this experience to other people.

-Kirsten Nolte, Germany (resident Vikasa Yoga teacher in Koh Samui)”

“If we try to interpret the literal meaning of Vikasa Yoga – “Evolution of Yoga” we may end up in confusion because since Yoga is everything and has always been there then how can it evolve? In my opinion the “evolution” should be understood within the concept of “learning from a living master”. What really evolves is not Yoga but what we think it is. That is when you progress far enough in becoming more aware of yourself and all the interconnected things around you through your own practice it becomes your true knowledge. To pass it on you create a recipe which will later be called “style” in such a way that other people could have similar experience of their own by constantly touching the edge of the self-awareness level available to them at the moment. That is why today most of us describe Vikasa style as strong, physically challenging, pushing beyond the boundary etc. Because this is how we can best feel the response within our own selves at the moment. Although looks like some people can actually feel it even at deeper levels. I still can’t . Anyway, this knowledge has now become our own because we have all seen how tremendously fast we became stronger and literally got to know our body limits and how easily these limits can be extended. But this knowledge has already slightly transformed inside each of us. That is one aspect of evolution. Another aspect of evolution is that as our self-awareness deepens the number of things we can experience also grows. That is why if we continue our practice and progress farther the “recipe” we can come up with for the followers will also be different from the initial one: simply because the “vocabulary” of available things to experience has become bigger. And so on.

This is what differentiates Vikasa from certain other schools which so much focus on following the traditions or some other “metaphysical” reasons of having asanas put in this or that exact order that it becomes a dogma; and dogma is not at all what Vikasa is

He has been passionately learning, practicing, and teaching Yoga for over six years, and his passion has lead him to search out his own personal development throughout the world. This quest has brought him into contact with many different schools and masters all over the world, in places such as Rishi-kesh, Uttar Kashi, Gangotri, Kerala, Goa, Canada, Thailand, Hong Kong and Ukraine to name a few. He has completed teacher trainings in three different disciplines, including Ashtanga Vinyasa, Yoga 23 (by master Andrei Siderski) and Sivananda. Such an overwhelming wealth of knowledge has led to a deeper understanding of yoga practice as an ever evolving process – rather than a finalized system, as a tool for evolution of a human being – rather than a goal in itself. Hence, the concept of “Evolution of Yoga” was born. The concept of “evolution of yoga” is based on the notion that everything in the world evolves constantly, including human beings. Our primary goal as a human race and that of any living organism is evolution, and yoga can be seen as a tool to facilitate such evolution in any given individual. However, as the practice of yoga itself changes with time and place, as new techniques are being introduced, the approach is becoming more technical, precise and scientific, any definition of it as a system or style seems to be a limitation in itself. Therefore, the “Evolution of Yoga” approach has to be seen as an ever-evolving process, based on classical hatha yoga techniques, which anyone can be a part of, rather than a complete static system.

In the beginning, and to the present, Yoga has shown him that life is about the quality of our present experience. For the last three years he has been teaching integrated Yoga practices from many teachers and styles with a little something extra… through a penchant for profound yet simple observances, he reminds us of the vastness of the infinite possibilities, each contained within this present moment. These Zen koan like anecdotes cultivate a practice opened up to discoveries and evolution within the planes of experience. Since becoming a certified teacher he has facilitated practitioners while teaching at detox retreats, conducting workshops and scheduled classes in USA, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as teaching bilingual Yoga teacher courses. He has also worked extensively with students privately, one on one, creating practices that provide personal challenge, encouragement, and humor. Taking inspiration from nature, music, performance arts, Taoism, and Tai chi, to name a few influences, his classes are often described as organic, flowing, and demanding, yet… meditative… all while developing the experience of limitless human-being.
